The Hunter Valley’s newest cellar door, Eagles Rest Wines, is now open. It’s centrally located on Oakey Creek Road with nice views across the vineyards. The winemaker is P.J Charteris, who was previously a winemaker at Lindeman’s, Penfolds and Brokenwood. The wines are made on site, and while there is a strong focus on the typical grape varieties of the Hunter – semillon, chardonnay and shiraz – you will also find on the tasting list a shiraz from South Australia and a Cabernet Sauvignon from Margaret River. I tried a couple of chardonnays and a couple of the shiraz wines – all very good, especially the Maluna Vineyard releases. Worth checking out!
